Trend in Market Size

 

In fiscal 2020, the market sales will be 38-40 billion yen at retail price. Due in part to the huge success of Demon Slayer, the capsule toy industry saw asteady increase in sales during the COVID-19 pandemic, as specialty stores continued to expand. Although there were some good characters, the sales growth was largely due to the fact that the manufacturer’s original products, rather than capsule toys with anime character specifications, were accepted by adultwomen who were not conventional capsule toy users。

The capsule toy market in 2021 is also showing steady growth as last year. The number of stores where the machines are installed is also increasing, especially in specialty capsule toy stores and JR stations.

・Capsule toys have traditionally had a strong image of being aimed at children, but nowadays, high quality capsule toys aimed at adults are becoming mainstream
・Since 1995, with the release of Slim Boy, the number of 200 yen products has increased, and the boom in the collection of high quality figures has led to an increase in the purchase of capsule toys by adults. Since 2018, 300 yen products have become the mainstream.
・In recent years, more than 30 manufacturers have released 300 new products every month, and 60% to 70% of them are aimed at adults.
・The number of stores specializing in capsule toys such as “Gacha Gacha no Mori” is increasing. In the past six years, capsule toys have been picked up by the media and have gained recognition, and adults are now buying them, which is probably the reason for the expansion.
・There are also stores in the U.S. and Europe, but most of the products are low-priced toys for children.
・Japan is the only country where high-priced products are purchased mainly by adults.

The Japanese capsule toy market, which exceeded 45 billion yen in 2021, will continue to expand in 2022 as the number of locations where machines are installed increases. I don’t know what kind of year 2023 will be, but I hope that in this country that loves capsule toys, it’s no longer a boom, but that it’s normal to buy capsule toys.
